Back to Basics of Energy Healing

What are energy blocks?

There are zones in your energy system that have become dead zones. Without energy routing there, you find yourself looping, doing the same thing over and over, or quitting right before the thing is about to happen. These are blocks, and they're easy enough to shift.

Your energy system is, at its simplest, information working together. When it's whole, you flow with life: something happens, you respond in the wisest way available to you, and you keep moving. But some moments are so intense, so fraught with feeling, that they're too big for your system to process in the moment. So the system does something clever — it collapses that experience, puts it somewhere, and files it away to deal with later.

That's the drawer strategy. And what's in the drawer is what we call an energy block.

So what exactly is a block?

An energy block is a part of your energy that got trapped — you'll also hear "stuck energy" or "trapped energy," which are the same idea. The place where that energy condensed is now protected by the rest of your system, because the last time it was touched, you were overwhelmed. Putting it away was the safest thing your system knew how to do.

Except life doesn't leave the drawer closed. Life needs all of you to respond, so it keeps poking the places that hold the trapped parts — and each time it pokes, your system flags danger and adds another protective layer over the zone of hurt, or anger, or whatever got deemed unacceptable.

Why you keep repeating the same patterns

Anything that resonates with a blocked place gets blocked too. Your energy learns to reroute around it — using your mind for something that's really the heart's work, because the heart is blocked. Talking, talking, talking so nobody can see the true desire or the true emotion underneath. The rerouting works, sort of. But it means you don't have full access to your energy — to your full intelligence, your full capacity, your full life.

And here's the part most people miss: the patterns you keep recreating aren't random. They're aimed. The same scenario shows up over and over precisely because it's trying to reach the stuck energy — trying to help you heal and grow and be who you are.

Everyone has them (please don't make this a death sentence)

Every single one of us has, or has had, blocks in our energy system. It is not a problem to dramatize. Blocks even create compensations — you over-develop another part of your being, and that can be genuinely interesting — until it's not, because the pattern keeps circling back.

And you are blocking and unblocking all the time. You block when a storm is happening inside and you choose not to feel it — which can be exactly the right call in the moment. You unblock when you receive a massage and get that deep exhale. When you have the scary conversation you'd been avoiding, and it goes well, and you don't die. When you dance, and your hips move in the places that had gone stiff.

Approach your blocks with curiosity and care — because there's nothing really wrong.

A small, real example

One summer, some travels fell through and I had a travel-insurance claim to make. My intuition told me clearly: make the claim, make it now. And for some reason, my heels dug in. I procrastinated for months — and the block quietly poisoned more than the claim. Any time travel plans came up in conversation (and I know a lot of people who travel), I'd skirt the topic or physically leave the room. My capacity to simply be with life, anywhere near travel and insurance, had been cut off. That's how blocks work: small on paper, wide in reach.

How do energy blocks heal?

Blocks live in the energy system — in the chakras — so chakra healing, energy healing and block-releasing are one and the same work. The key ingredients aren't force or willpower: they're love, forgiveness and care. A block formed because a moment was too big to feel alone; it releases when the trapped part of you is finally met with enough safety and warmth to finish what it started. That can happen on a practitioner's table, in a practice like Reiki, or in one honest conversation.
