Back to Basics of Energy Healing

What is healing?

What do you call it when you want a conscious, thoughtful life, and your subconscious keeps running a different program — the same hurt, the same pattern, over and over, like being stuck in a washing machine with no break? That's the signal that healing needs to get on the agenda.

What healing actually is

Energy is information, and the system of you — your organs, your blood, your emotions, your thoughts — all of it is your energy system. In life, there are parts of us we just can't handle in the moment. We reject them, separate from them, get hurt, and put up defenses. Healing is undoing that: returning to being whole, becoming who you are without the conditioning, without the hurt, without the protection.

That means all the parts of you online and available — even the parts you'd rather not admit to. The confused part. The jealous part. The part that would laugh like a maniac if it got the chance. All of it is part of being a human being. Nothing to be ashamed of. When those parts get included, they actually show their genius, their gifts. When they stay stuck and separated from the rest of you, whatever they were trying to do for you bursts out in a way that isn't helpful.

Healing is what lets your wisdom come online — so you can respond, instead of react.

Why the icky stuff shows up first

On the way to healing, you're going to see a lot of things you don't want to see. These are your shadows — hiding in the subconscious, springing forward when life happens a certain way. That's the gap between wanting a conscious life and reacting without thinking — and that reaction is what creates the whole situation you feel like you can't get out of.

Healing means scaling all the way back to the core of what's there, welcoming it, accepting it, even befriending it. These hurt places don't give good results, so there's a catch: we know that, and we push them down further — and the more we push them down, the harder they try to come back up. Instead, look at what's actually there. What does it want? Is it protecting something? Offer it care instead of a fight.

This isn't the same as indulging it

To be clear: this doesn't mean your worst impulses get to run the show just because they deserve love too — that's not healing, that's lazy. Real healing means being with the energy of even an ugly impulse, like murderous rage, without acting on it. That rage might be carrying a lot of stuck emotion that, once it moves, brings you back into your power, your boundaries, your strength.

There's a subtler version of the same thing. A part of you is unhappy and wants to complain. The surface move is: stay positive, don't complain. That's not wrong, but it's management, not healing. The healing move is to look at where you're complaining, find the need that isn't being met, find the real hurt underneath, and tend to that hurt directly — not pushing it down, and not "I'm lovable as I am, so let me complain for hours until everyone around me is sick of me." Healing includes taking responsibility for what's actually hurting.

What changes on the other side

As you get to the core places creating the patterns you don't want, you reclaim that territory and put love there instead. The next time life hits that same place, it doesn't feel like being punched in the gut anymore.

It doesn't feel like being punched in the gut anymore. More like: ow, that hurt — and I'm still standing.

That small difference changes everything about how you respond. Instead of three weeks of Netflix, you keep building the thing that's yours to build.

Let what triggers you lead you to the root

A mindset shift worth taking: let everything that triggers you be a path toward healing. Life punches you in the gut — instead of "poor me," follow it. See what actually hurts. Maybe there's a core belief under there — I'm not good enough, I'll never be loved — follow it all the way down. Life runs on a million branches; follow them and you get to the root. Meet every bit of it with curious, loving attention. That's really all healing requires.

Every part of you is trying to help

One last thing: you are not made of unlovable parts. Every part of you showed up because it loves you, wants what's best for you, wants you to survive. Sometimes that shows up distorted and creates results you never wanted — like a friend trying to help you and doing a terrible job of it. See your wounded places the same way: a friend trying, badly, but a friend nonetheless.

The moment I knew I needed it

I was nineteen, in my first romantic relationship, and we'd moved in together. It wasn't working, for reasons that don't matter here, and I cried constantly. One day I was crying in the apartment, like I did a lot back then, and his stepmother — who lived close by — came through, gathered me in her arms, and just said it plainly: you're crying all the time, huh, well that's not normal, that's not where we want you to be, and it's okay to ask for help. That was one of the bottom moments for me — someone there, telling me gently, no, sweetie, no.

It can be scary to move onto the path of healing, and there's always more to work through. Once your own history is more or less healed, you're invited to help heal what's around you too. It's a beautiful path.
